What Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents Helped Me Understand

healing from emotional childhood wounds

Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents
by Lindsay C. Gibson

This was one of those books that stayed with me long after I finished it. I actually listened to the audiobook and completed it within three days because I found it that powerful and insightful. It helped me understand so many of my emotions more deeply, especially where some of them may have come from.

As the eldest daughter, I’ve always carried the understanding that my parents were becoming parents for the first time too, and in many ways, they did a really good job. At the same time, there were certain things shaped by traditional Asian culture that made parts of emotional understanding and communication more difficult. What I appreciated most about this book is that it didn’t make me feel resentful, instead, it gave me more clarity, compassion, and language for things I had quietly felt for a long time.

For me, the biggest win was being able to understand where my parents may have been coming from and then having open conversations with them about it. That kind of understanding felt healing.

I would genuinely recommend this book to everyone, even if you feel like you had a good childhood. I think it helps us better understand not only ourselves, but also the people who shaped us. It is a deeply validating and thoughtful read.

My take
A healing, eye opening book that helped me better understand my emotions, my upbringing, and the people I love.
